Community. United Way touches people throughout the community by helping people, organizing volunteers, and advocating for worthy causes.
The United Way of Fostoria approved a goal of $205,000 for this year’s community-wide campaign. “It’s close to $10,000 more than raised in 2022,” said Tom Borer, UWF board president, “which reflects increasing needs mostly due to inflation.”
The board approved 16 Agency Partners to be funded in 2024 through the 2023 campaign. Agency partnership is based on the recommendation of a committee of local community leaders who represent donor interests. They review each agency partner annually to assure the agency is providing services that are needed and wanted by Fostorians, has good service outcomes, and has appropriate board participation and financial management.
The Partners and their supported services are Black Swamp Area Boys Scouts and Northwest Ohio Girl Scouts, youth development; DayBreak SAIDO Learning Center, therapy for dementia patients; FACT, financial assistance for cancer treatment; First Call For Help Fostoria, information and referral; First Step Center for Domestic Violence Services, shelter for victims of domestic violence;
Habitat for Humanity, developing decent, affordable housing; Fostoria Learning Center, workforce training, Fostoria Senior Citizens, social involvement for the 50-plus crowd; Getting Ahead, teaching life skills to adults; HOPE in Fostoria, substance abuse prevention and education; PatchWorks House, supervised visitation and exchanges for children whose families are in crisis;
Red Cross, North Central Ohio, emergency support for victims of natural disasters; Seneca-Crawford Area Transportation, public transportation; St Vincent de Paul Society, giving a helping hand to people in need; and Geary Family YMCA, youth sports programs, member scholarships, childcare support, swimming lessons and summer recreation program.
Preparations are underway for the fundraising campaign which officially kicks off this fall. One hundred percent of the money donated stays local. Fostoria is a single zip code United Way, serving the Fostoria area exclusively.
